POST
OFFICE AND
COMMUNICATIONS:
There
are many places to send postcards. It is nice to send postcards to you family and friends. You can buy them in most of the souvenir shops in Galapagos.
Bellsouth
and Porta are now in the Galapagos Islands. There is cell phone coverage
from almost all islands as well as the majority of yachts.
You
can buy phone cards, and on the main street, there is a Pacifictel office
with several phone cabins. (In all the populated ports, you can find
Pacifictel, Porta and Bellsouth cabins.) Phone calls to the United States after 8:00 PM generally
run around $.25/minute. Europe is a bit more, and Latin America is very
expensive! The country code for Ecuador is 593, and the Galapagos have
an area code of 05. All phone numbers have six digits preceded by an
area code.
There
are many Internet cafes and cabins, and they are about $2.00/hour. Considering
on the mainland it costs around $.80/hour, it's very expensive and slow!
I recommend making a list of things you want to write beforehand and
sending a group e-mail from the islands.
